Inside Job…

Each night before I go to bed, my routine includes a perimeter check of all windows, doors and locks around my home. I literally can’t go to sleep at night if I haven’t personally completed the “lock-down.” Every time I perform this little task, my mind shutters at the thought of someone breaking into my home and stealing my property, or worse yet, harming my family. I have similar thoughts as I leave my business at the end of each day while setting the alarm.

Recently, we have experienced a surge in burglary in our neighborhood and surrounding area. In talking with some of the victims, I have learned some interesting details. If you ever worry about your personal or family safety, here are four important considerations:

The Inside Job - A large majority of the crimes committed have a connection to you or your family in some way. In our neighborhood, we had 14 break-ins in one month. To our surprise, we learned the robberies were committed by a landscaping crew who was installing landscaping at many of these new homes. They would case the home as the worked in the yards and come back later to rob them. Even more surprising is the fact that this particular landscape company was recommended by our Home Owner’s Association and was also our community landscaper! So, the next time you call the plumber, electrician, appliance repair person, or the cable guy… make sure you know who you are letting into your home. In many cases, you willingly allow home service providers access to the most private areas of your home. At this point, the door locks are the east of your worries.

High Risk in Service Industry - Unfortunately, when individuals with a criminal record are seeking employment, the service industry is an easy target. Most home service providers have very lax employee screening protocol, if any. Even large companies who screen internal employees tend to hire independent contractors without monitoring their screening process at all. Yet, these companies are liable for the actions of their employees or contractors when performing work while representing their brand. Why do they cut corners and take this risk?

Instant Background Checks - There is a plethora of so-called “instant background check” companies online. If your service providers use theses products, be afraid… they are not even close to a true background check. These instant products are merely a database search of disjointed and incomplete court records, and criminals know how easy it is to beat them. Your safety is worth the time it takes to complete real background investigation, by a real private investigator. These services are available to companies that truly care about protecting their staff and their customers.

You have control - There is no need to sit back and simply hope you never become a victim of a crime in your own home. You have the right to know who is coming into your home or business by requiring them to provide identification and proof of a thorough and clean background check. You can demand that your service provider conducts real background investigations on their employees before sending them to your home. Investigative background checks are available for as little as $59 and only take about three or four days.

It’s worth the extra effort to demand proper credentials when hiring someone to come onto your property. Why wait until your watch is missing or you catch the carpet-cleaning guy going through your wife’s lingerie drawer? Be proactive about protecting your property from an inside job. Smart companies practice smart hiring, so hire crime free vendors… it’s your right!
